The Nicholson City Council unanimously approved Monday a $18,000 bid from Walter Barnett Construction for electrical work at the city’s new public works storage facility.
The bid and other financial matters took up much of the 30-minute meeting.
Electrical Bid Approved
Mayor Steve T. Nichols told the council that rough-in plumbing for the building had already been completed by Public Works Director Doyle Samples and had passed inspection.
The mayor said he expects the building to be installed by the end of the month, following earlier delays. The plumbing did not pass its initial inspection, requiring additional adjustments before the concrete slab could be poured. It passed upon reinspection and is now installed.
Maintenance and Paving Update
The council unanimously approved $9,910 in additional funds for KCI Engineering toward maintenance and paving work.
Councilman Josh Burkhalter asked about the paving timeline. Nichols said KCI is preparing the bid package and hopes to have it ready by the end of the month. He noted that colder weather could delay the paving process.
Finances Inquiry
Councilmember Josh Burkhalter questioned a negative net income of $11,008 in the August financial statement. Finance Director Glenda Cantrell explained the deficit was due to a $25,000 repair of the Community Center awning. An insurance reimbursement check for $48,000 will be deposited into the general fund, the city clerk told the council.
October Happenings at Nicholson Library
Nichols read a report from library manager Rhonda O’Keeffe outlining upcoming events at the Nicholson Public Library during October.
That’s a busy place, proud of our library, they are moving forward,” he said.
The library’s annual Boo Fest will be on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 5 p.m. Activities include a magic show along with games, crafts and prizes.
In other business, the council will discuss a decrease in cemetery prices at the next work session on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m in an effort to be competitive with nearby city cemeteries.
