Russell Henley Captures The Sony Open

Athens, GA—Wright Gazaway—Russell Henley was able to capture the Sony Open over the weekend. He shot a 24-under and was able to beat his competition by three shots. In the four rounds, he totaled three rounds of a 63, 7-under. Head golf coach at Georgia, Chris Haack says this win “is huge for the  program. Anytime a player can win, we reap the benefits.”

The victory is part of a long line of success for Georgia grads at the professional level. Harris English and Chris Kirk also finished in the top 10. “It’s always fun to have guys in contention to win, but to have three…that’s just awesome,” he added.

Senior TJ Mitchell is an aspiring professional golfer. He says that “seeing Henley win gives us all the confidence that we can win at that level. No added pressure, just confidence. Haack wouldn’t mind the pressure because he says it is the pressure that allows him to see if guys can play.

We were unable to reach Henley due to his busy travel schedule but Haack said he was in high spirits.
