Search Committee Announces Four Finalists for New Dean of Grady College

It’s official. The search committee announced Friday the names of the four finalists in the run for Grady’s new dean. Finalists include:

  • Michael Evans, interim dean and associate professor, Indiana University School of Journalism
  • Jeffrey Springston, associate dean for research and graduate studies and professor, Grady College
  • Charles Davis, professor, University of Missouri School of Journalism and facilitator, Mizzou Advantage program, Office of the Provost
  • Derina Holtzhausen, director and professor, Oklahoma State University School of Media and Strategic Communications

Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine Dr. Sheila Allen is chair of the search committee. She says the committee wanted someone with experience in teaching and research—two missions important to Grady. Of course, the process started with many more than just four candidates.

Dr. Allen says, “We had individuals apply from a lot of different factions of the different industries that Grady represents, and I think they’ll be very pleased with the four finalists chosen. So, we’re looking forward to the process.”

Senior Mass Media Arts major Clare Callahan would love to see focus on the future from the new dean.

Callahan says, “I think that the new dean needs to be excited about the direction of the field, and be excited and show enthusiasm about where journalism will be in two years, five years, ten years…”

Current dean, E. Culpepper “Cully” Clark announced his intention to retire last spring. He has held the position since 2006. Dr. Clark says he wants someone with their finger on the pulse of media future to take his place.

Starting February 14th, each candidate will have the opportunity to give a presentation open to the public at Tate Student Center’s reception hall.

Each presentation will be 40 minutes long with a 20-minute period for questions and answers.

As of now, there is no date set for a final announcement.
