If you live in Athens-Clarke county, in a few weeks you can return to the polls for special elections.

You can see a sample of the upcoming ballot on the Board of Elections website, every section will not be on every ballot, but here’s the rundown so you can find out what applies to you.

  • The City of Winterville will have two sections on the ballot–a city election, as well as a special election to fill three City Council seats. Brenda Keen is running against incumbents Gary Snow and Kenneth Tweedell, you can choose two of them. Mark Farmer and  Savannah Hembree are both running for the open seat vacated when Marcus Boenig resigned.

 

  • The House District 117 Seat (if you live in certain parts of Clarke, Oconee, Barrow or Jackson, that’s you) is up for grabs. The two candidates are Republican Houston Gaines and Democrat Deborah Gonzales.

 

  • The District 119 Seat (Clarke, Barrow, Oconee and Jackson counties) is also on November’s ballot.  Republicans Lawton Lord, Marcus Wiedower and Stephen Strickland are on the ballot, Democrat Jonathan Wallace.

 

  • You will also see a TSPLOST referendum on the ballot. This special-purpose local-option sales tax will help fund transportatio. If voters approve, sales taxes will increase by 1%, making sales taxes 8% in Athens-Clarke County.

 

Tomorrow, Tuesday October 10th, is the last day to register to vote. You can do this in the Board of Elections Office until 5 pm or online until midnight.

Polls wil open at 7 am on November 7th, 2017, but you can vote early starting next Monday, October 16th at the Board of Elections Office, and one Saturday voting day on October 28th.
