Rick Dunn enrolled in the University of Georgia in 1971, and he said he faced adversities for being a Black student at a predominantly white institution during his time at UGA.

He ended up leaving college and started working as a radio host for WXAG — for more than 30 years.

Later, he returned to UGA, graduating in 1993.

From this experience, Dunn started his nonprofit organization, Athens-Clarke County High School Completion Initiative, to help the youth pursue post-secondary opportunities.

He’s now been in Athens for more than 40 years, and as the founder/executive director of the initiative, his goal is to help students by sharing his experiences that can equip them with skills for life

Timothy Goldsmith is a graduate student in journalism in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia.
