Want to show your support for veterans on Veterans Day on Wednesday? Here are a few ways you could get involved in the Athens area:
- 10 a.m – The Friends of Oconee Cemetery Veterans Day celebration
- 11 a.m. – Oconee Veterans Memorial Foundation, Inc. 2015 Veterans Day ceremony
- 3 p.m. – AMVETS Post 10 cookout
- All day – Veterans Day flag display in UGA’s Memorial Garden
Can’t make it any of these events? Then change one of your porch lights or any light in your house to green to support veterans and their futures for Veterans Day. ‘Greenlight A Vet’ is a campaign to establish visible national support for veterans by turning one light green. More than 2.2 million people have clicked their support on the campaign website.
“The simple action of changing one light to green is intended to spark a national conversation regarding the recognition of veterans,” according to the campaign website, “and ‘greenlight’ them forward as valued members of our communities.”
The success of the campaign has caused green bulbs to be in short supply in some locations. See how people are showing their support in other ways on Walmart’s website.
