Grady Newsource Explains: Madison County Jail Expansion

By: Damian C. Reynolds

The overcrowded all-male Madison County Jail will begin a $2.65 million expansion soon and also has the potential to become coed.

The jail currently houses 101 male inmates, but has only 64 beds. The expansion will add 32 beds, but Capt. Greg Fisk, Madison County jail facilitator, says female inmates may potentially be in the new facility.

Inmate escapes are the biggest concern for the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, but they plan to tighten security by keeping the inmates in one area when the expansion finishes.
