ATHENS, Ga. — On Wednesday night, the police, the local NAACP and the Athens-Clarke County Police Department will discuss issues of police, race and deadly force.

For Amber Webb, chairman of the UGA College Republicans, this is an important event.

“Let’s try and find a solution for this because it’s a partisan issue and it really shouldn’t be,” Webb said.

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department was looking forward to the event, too.

“We want people to see us as part of this community… As a resource to help improve this community and make it better than it already is,” said Epifanio Rodriguez, the public information officer for the ACCPD.

For UGA professor Brian N. Williams, who teaches public administration, that message is important.

“The public and the police are one. You can’t separate [them],” Williams said.

For Webb, the College Republican chairman, the panel is also a chance to show some unity during a contentious election.

“We have two weeks until the election. In the midst of this, as dirty as it will get, we are all going to be able to stand strong together,” Webb said.
