Bob Googe thought he was ready for this.

Googe owns Jittery Joe’s Coffee, a popular coffee chain in Northeast Georgia. After the economic crisis in 2008, Googe restructured his business to survive another challenge. But he never expected this.

It’s apocalyptic…I don’t think anyone can structure their business to survive the economy hitting a wall,” Googe said.

Googe doesn’t know when he will next see a paycheck, despite the federal government offering $376 billion in relief for small businesses after passing the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act

Like many small business owners, Googe applied for federal relief. Through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and a Small Business Emergency Disaster Loan, it’s possible Googe can continue to pay the staff he’s retained along with the continuing payments for his storefronts.

Googe has questions which, so far, have not received many answers. And he’s not alone.

Who Can Sign Up?

All businesses with 500 employees or fewer, including self-employed businesses, can apply for both programs. In certain cases, businesses with more than 500 employees may apply, if they meet the Small Business Administration’s size standards for that field.

How Can You Sign Up?

Eligible small businesses can search for a nearby lender and begin the application process for both the Small Business Emergency Disaster Loan or the PPP.

Local businesses with questions can contact the Georgia district of the Small Business Administration.

Some 82% of small employers applied for funds from the PPP and 77% of applicants received all of the funding they sought. The government is releasing another batch of PPP money to these businesses, and our I-Team learned some are still struggling to get the help. It can take time and effort to research and apply for funding. … The programs help connect small businesses with federal grants.
