Laid with Love: Hippie Hens Homestead Works Toward Ethical Sustainability

As more people look for ways to live sustainably, small farms like Hippie Hens Homestead are leading by example. Raising chickens for fresh eggs not only cuts down on waste costs but also promotes self-reliance and ethical animal care.

For Lacy Martin, sustainability goes far beyond efficiency. It’s about respect for the animals she raises, the environment she nurtures and the community she shares it with.

Each egg gathered is a small act of intention, part of a larger effort to live closer to nature and to remind others that sustainability doesn’t have to be complicated.

“I think it’s important for people to understand where their food comes from because it’s important to understand what we’re putting in our body,” Martin said. “If you are raising animals who are gonna give you meat, are gonna give you eggs, it’s important that they live a happy life, not just our lives are happy because they’re in it.”

It’s important to me that they live a happy life, a healthy life, that they are loved, that they are cared for.”

At Hippie Hens Homestead, sustainability isn’t a trend, but a way of life that blends environmental awareness with everyday practice, showing how big change can start on a small scale.
