Athens-Clarke County commission has allocated $260,000 for pedestrian and bicycle improvements.
There with be $203,000 designated for the construction of the budget has been designated for the construction of new crosswalk projects. The goal is to make all the crosswalks consistent with one another by having the same pavement markings and signage.
The ACC is renovating crosswalks on South Lumpkin, Prince Avenue, Dougherty Street, South Milledge Avenue and Baxter Street.
A majority of the money will be allocated to Prince Avenue ($85,000) and South Milledge Avenue ($80,000). Enhancements to the crosswalks will include installation of high visibility crosswalk markings, warning signs, overhead Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons and standardizing crosswalks.
Public works director, David Clark, said that the project is expected to be completed by August 2016.
