Athens for Everyone Collects Donations Outside Downtown Ben & Jerry’s

Waiting in line to get Ben & Jerry’s ice cream for Free Cone Day took about 20 minutes on Tuesday afternoon but was much quicker for those willing to pay.

Athens For Everyone, which describes itself as a grassroots democracy community empowerment group, partnered with the ice cream shop and offered the ability to cut the line in exchange for a few dollars toward the organization. Jesse Houle, a representative said the money would be donated in recognition of May Day, an international day honoring workers.

Tim Denson, who ran for mayor Athens, promised to shave his beard — a prominent symbol for his campaign — if the group collected $1,000. Athens for Everyone did not meet its goal, raising only $800.

Houle said the group did exceed its other goal — reaching 1,000 signatures for a petition to be delivered to Gov. Nathan Deal regarding House Bill 859, popularly known as the campus carry bill.
