Driver Charged with Vehicular Homicide after Striking Cyclists

Athens, GA– A driver has been charged with homicide by vehicle first degree after striking three bicyclists on Athena Drive. The driver was determined to be under the influence of drugs at the time of the accident.

At approximately 6 p.m. on September 12, a vehicle heading west crossed the center line on Athena Drive, leaving one cyclist dead and two injured. One of the surviving victims was critically injured and is being treated at Athens Regional Medical Center.

Currently, the road is open to all traffic. Athens-Clarke County Police Department is conducting an investigation.

The accident comes the same week Athens-Clarke County Public Works is applying to the League of American Bicyclists to become a Bicycle Friendly Community. The county is currently a bronze-level member.
