ATLANTA — The Georgia senate passed a bill Friday that would allow gun possession on public university campuses within the state.
House Bill 859 would allow anyone with a weapons license who is 21 years or older to carry guns on college grounds, with the exception of dormitories, fraternity and sorority houses and athletic events. The bill also mandates that guns must be concealed and only those who hold a permit would be allowed to carry.
University of Georgia President Jere Morehead publicly announced his opposition to the bill March 2 in an email sent through the Archnews listserv. Comments from University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby’s testimony in the Georgia Senate Judiciary Committee were included in the email.
The bill awaits the signature of Governor Nathan Deal to be signed into law.
