When Aly McGuire first applied to work at Athens Health & Fitness, she didn’t expect to become one of the gym’s key leaders. Now, as a manager, McGuire has helped establish one of the few women-only fitness spaces in Athens, Georgia.

Listen below as she shares how stepping into a male-dominated industry shaped her approach to leadership, why she began signing emails as “McGuire,” and how she’s empowering women to reclaim space in the gym, starting with confidence, not competition.

UGA Girl Gains Club

The Girl Gains Club at the University of Georgia gives women a space to grow stronger, both physically and mentally, through group workouts, shared experiences and supportive friendships.

Members like Mary Ellinor, Megan Hanson, Ayla Maughon and Madeline Warren explain in the video below how the club helps them challenge stereotypes, navigate gym culture and define strength on their own terms. From pilates to powerlifting, this club fosters a culture of empowerment, confidence and belonging.

Kimberly Thomas is a fourth-year student majoring in journalism.
