Athens, Ga.- There has been a rise in flu cases across Northeast Georgia.
Georgia Horsley, a nurse practitioner for the Bulldog Urgent Care at the University of Georgia says that she has seen more students and people within the Athens community being tested positive for both influenza A and B. The two types of influenza viruses found in humans.
There have been more than 51 confirmed flu related deaths in the state of Georgia including the death of a child, and according to the CDC, this is only the peak of the season and it’s the most severe season in recent years.
The Georgia Department of Public Health says that during the week of January 21st-27th there were 120 flu related hospitalizations and 1,027 hospitalizations total this season.
Adults over the age of 65 and children under the age of 5 are at high risk for developing flu-related complications. Women who are pregnant, and anyone with an exisiting medical condition such as asthma, heart disease and diabetes are also at high risk.
