-Athens, Ga
Two national Democratic Party leaders took verbal shots at local Republican Congressman Paul Broun. This war of words was not about the government shutdown, but instead it was about his medical degree being from the “pits of hell”.
Those were the words the Congressman used last year when he was giving a speech on the Bible and evolution at a local church. It’s those words that Democrats are now using against him.
Senator Chuck Schumer of New York made fun of those words when he appeared on CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” this morning. During his appearance, Schumer said that the country does not need a congressman like Broun leading the country especially when ” a third of what he learned in medical school come from the pits of hell.”
Congressman Broun responeded to Schumer’s statements by saying that they are political cheap shots. He also says that Schumer’s remarks were not only disrespectful to him but to the Medical College of Georgia where he received his medical degree.
Former Governor Howard Dean also joined in the conversation by questioning where congressmen like Paul Broun got their medical degrees.
Rep. Broun says those remarks by Sen. Schumer is just a way for him to avoid dealing with the issues important to Americans right now. When specifically asked about his comments at the church, Broun said that he stood by them.
Rep. Broun is one of several Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate being vacated by Senator Saxby Chambliss.
