Safety a Concern as School Board Considers New Entrance for Ila Elementary

IlaDANIELSVILLE – One of the oldest schools in Madison County may soon try something new.

A proposal by the county’s school board would turn a classroom at Ila Elementary School into a new front entrance where visitors would check in. School officials say they need to make this move to improve security at the Danielsville school.

The school’s front office is currently around the corner from the main entrance. School officials worry that this makes it difficult to monitor who is entering the building.

“There’s just been some concern, especially with the way things are happening in society and the world of today,” said Principal Amanda Wommack.

The Madison County Board of Education will consider the proposal at its 7 pm meeting at the Professional Learning Center #1 in Danielsville.

Money for the proposed project would come from leftover 2008 SPLOST funds. Madison County Superintendent Allen McCannon says the project should not cost more than $82,000.
