Some schools wait for tragedy to strike before change happens. But Jackson County isn’t waiting around for bad news to hit.

Georgia led the nation with 12 school shootings last year, according to an Everytown for Gun Safety report in 2014. Jackson County schools are trying to take precautionary measures to ensure Georgia isn’t No.1 in that catgeory again for the 2015 school year.

Dennis Patrick, Jackson County School Board director of ministries, installed new security systems in all the Jackson County schools for the 2014-2015 school year. The $240,000 system was taken out of the county’s SPLOST fund.

Patrick says the system was talked about in 2012 before the Sandy Hook tragedy – but after – Jackson County felt the installment could not wait. So far, no incidents have been recorded at any Jackson County schools.
