A Cedar Shoals High School bus hit a sinkhole while carrying students to school in Athens’ Nellie B community. It happened on Tuesday.  No one was injured.

Athens Public Utilities Director Glenn Coleman told Grady Newsource a broken six-inch water main washed away soil supporting the asphalt. Nellie B residents regained water service by day’s end.

The street above the sinkhole is covered with metal road plates. Public Information Officer Jeff Montgomery says the sinkhole is not a safety concern.
