UGA’s Spotlight in the Arts Festival Kicks Off Tomorrow

The University of Georgia’s Spotlight on the Arts Festival begins Nov. 4th and will last until Saturday, November 14th. The festival will feature more than 50 various events, and everyone is welcome to attend. Here is a list of the highlight events occurring this week:

  • Opening Celebration @  7:30 p.m., Performing Arts Center – This event will feature a sample of student music, dance and dramatic performances. There will be various speakers attending, including University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby and President Jere W. Morehead. A reception will be held at the Lamar Dodd School of Art following this event. Admission is free.

Thursday, Nov. 5th:

  • 4 minutes, 33 seconds competition – 4:33 p.m., Balcony Theatre, Fine Arts Building – The research at the University of Georgia will be highlighted during this, second annual competition of graduate students. Two winners will walk away with a $433 prize.
  • UGA Press Dirty Book Sale @ 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Tate Student Center  Students will be able to purchase slightly damaged or shopworn books ranging in subjects, such as nature writing, poetry, history, and many others. UGA ID must be shown in order for students to participate.
  • Fall Exhibitions Reception @ 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Libraries – This event will include light refreshments, guided tours, and gallery activities.   • A Reading by Poet Jeffrey Harrison @ 7 p.m., Ciné 234 W. Hancock Ave., Athens – Harrison is the author of five full-length books of poetry, and is a recipient of Guggenheim and NEA Fellowships, as well as other honors. He has published poems in the New Republic, the New Yorker, the NationPoetry, the Yale Review, the Hudson ReviewAmerican Poetry Review, the Paris ReviewPoets of the New CenturyThe Twentieth Century in Poetry, and in many other magazines and anthologies. Admission is free and open to the general public. Books will be available for purchase.

Friday, Nov. 6th:

  • UGA Press Dirty Book Sale @ 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., Tate Student Center – Students will be able to purchase slightly damaged or shopworn books ranging in subjects, such as nature writing, poetry, history, and many others. UGA ID must be shown in order for students to participate.
  • Football Friday Tour @ 3:30 p.m., Richard B. Russell Special Collections Libraries A guided tour of “Unbeaten, Untied, Undisputed: Georgia’s 1980 National Championship,” an exhibit of materials from the UGA Athletic Association Archives.
  • Film Screening: Heremakono/Waiting for Happiness @ 7 p.m., SCADshow Stage 2, 173 14th St., Atlanta, GA – The internationally acclaimed filmmaker Abderrahmane Sissako will visit Atlanta for two days of events including film screenings, student workshops, and an audience forum as part of France-Atlanta, a two-week series of events designed to foster cooperation between France and the U.S. Southeast in the scientific, business, cultural, and humanitarian domains.
  • Opera performance of Lehár: The Merry Widow @ 8 p.m., Hodgson Concert Hall, UGA Performing Arts Center
