VA Raises Money by Doing Polar Bear Plunge

Athens Rotary Club and the Disabled American Veterans joined forces to raise money necessary to buy a new van to transport vets to the Augusta VA Hospital. Currently they have a van, but its worn down due to long trips to Augusta daily. In order to raise enough money- they have a big fundraiser called Plungefest, or better known as “The Polar Bear Plunge.” This is where people team up and take in donations to “plunge” into Lake Chapman at Sandy Creek Park, and yes- in the middle of winter. Families and friends of all ages joined the plungers and enjoyed live music and lunch by the fireplace.

Reporter Sierra Grady went to Sandy Creek Park to check out the scene and also went down to the VA clinic.
