Athens-Clarke County is under a Winter Weather Advisory until 7pm tonight. That then turns into a Winter Storm Warning at 7pm and lasts all the way through noon on Thursday.
Winter Storm Warning, Winter Weather Advisory….what does it all mean?
With an ice storm potentially hitting Athens, the National Weather Service has issued multiple announcements about the potential threat. But the terminology can be confusing.
A Winter Winter Advisory is issued when there is threat of winter precipitation, such as snow or sleet. The National Weather Service also adds, “Advisories, in general, are issued for weather conditions that are expected to cause significant inconveniences and may be hazardous, These situations are normally not life threatening if caution is exercised.”
A Winter Storm Warning means that severe winter weather is imminent to within 36 hours. That means the National Weather Service is predicting that the worst of the storm will begin this evening, last all day Wednesday, and end by mid-afternoon on Thursday.
They have also predicted .4-.6 inches of ice to accumulate just on Wednesday.
We will bring you any more updates as we get them.
