A $1,000 grand prize is at stake, but the more important award is knowledge of Black History Month.
The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office Explorer’s team is one of several teams set to compete in this year’s Athens Area Black History Bowl. The Explorer’s team is composed of students across the northeast Georgia area.
Important Facts
The group is preparing for the competition held on March 19th at 12:00 p.m. in the Elizabeth G. King Gymnasium in Athens. According to Athens-Clarke County’s website, the Explorer’s team held their first study session from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on January 26th.
The Black History Bowl’s main goal is to help promote cultural awareness and knowledge of African-American history for Black History Month. This is the fourth year the competition has taken place.
The competition will be based on black history in multiple areas including science, politics, sports, and Georgia history. Students in grades 5-12 will partake in a bracket-style tournament to determine the winner.
Prize Money
According to Co-Chair Fred Smith of the Athens Area Black History Committee, this year’s event will feature 13 teams. The winner will take home a grand prize of $1,000. Second place will receive $500, and third and fourth place will receive $300 and $100, respectively. Each team can have as many members as they want, but only four may compete in each round.
