A request to rezone six acres on High Shoals Road for a special event venue was withdrawn from the December Bishop Town Council agenda.
The Oconee County Planning Commission in November recommended denial of the rezone for the property adjacent to the planned location of St. Aelred Catholic Church, according to reporting by retired journalism professor Lee Becker.
In other news, Town Clerk Lacy Armstrong presented an update about the ongoing renovations at the community center. The doors and stairs have been installed, the bathroom layouts have been drawn-up with a plumber, the drywall will go up this week and upon its completion, painting will begin.
“It’s moving slower than I would like,” Mayor Drew Kurtz said.
It was also mentioned that Southern Grounds Landscaping hung more lights than its contracted required amount to show good-faith to the town of Bishop. Council member Deborah Lucas raised concerns over future contracts having a more feasible budget.
I want to say once again, the lights look great,” council member Chuck Hadden said.
Lucas also urged the council to start brainstorming ideas for a comprehensive five-year plan to give Bishop clear guidance on how to best serve its residents.
“That’s going to be what helps us move forward productively,” Lucas said.
