Matthew Hood is in the Athens Clarke County Jail. His brother is familiar with the place, he spent some time there after a shoot out with the Athens Police. He faces charges for obstruction of justice.

Things might seem quiet now, but the sound of gunfire filled the Broad Acres Apartments early Saturday morning.

Everett Thomas Green and his girlfriend Crystall Barrett say they were in the apartment complex when two men tried to rob them.

Green and Barrett say one man snatched a bottle of pills from them. Green attempted to chase down the suspects, then admits he fired shots. That’s when police came out to investigate.

Police followed one of those suspects into Apartment 151. When the suspect came out the front door, the police apprehended him and cuffed him on the ground, only to find out, it was Matthew Hood.

But in this neighborhood, the people we spoke to say it could have been anyone.

Neighbors here say they are disappointed, but not surprised at the violence.

One father said, “Luckily it was later or earlier in the morning, so no kids were out, but still, it’s ridiculous.”

He did not want his face to appear on camera out of fear more violence like this might show up at his own doorstep, but he told us “Stuff is going to happen, but I just try to keep my kids away from, stuff happening on a normal basis. There are things happening I try to keep them away from.”

More than anything restidents want this community to be safe.

Matthew Hood is still in jail. His bond is set at three thousand dollars.
