“More Than My Sport” is a women’s initiative, sponsored by the UGA Athletic Association, to help female student athletes learn from professionals about their experiences with entering the workforce after their sport.
This year’s event was held in the new West End Zone of Sanford Stadium and gave student athletes a chance to hear from women who have been in their shoes and listen to stories of how they made the transition from sport to workforce.
Guest Speakers
The panel featured UGA alums Brandi Hunter-Lewis, Maritza McClendon and Bonney Shuman, and it was led by ESPN sports reporter Holly Rowe.
Hunter-Lewis was a women’s basketball player at UGA and is now a luxury real-estate agent for Keller Williams. Maritza McClendon, a former swimmer at the university and Olympic medalist, is now a senior brand marketing manager.
More than 100 female student athletes were in attendance, along with coaches and athletic association faculty members.
All women spoke about their journey of transitioning from a full-time student to a young adult entering the workforce.
Holly Rowe explained what life was like before Title IX, legislation that recognized women’s sports at the varsity level and collegiate level.
