Food Deserts Prevalent in Athens Area

Food deserts have been a part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative to overcoming childhood obesity. The Athens area suffers from this.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture defines food deserts as “Low access to a healthy food retail outlet [more] than 1 mile from a supermarket or large grocery store in urban areas and as more than 10 miles from a supermarket or large grocery store in rural areas.”

Essentially this means that people cannot get healthy, fresh, and nutritious food choices near them.
