Athens, Georgia – Former University of Georgia head football coach Vince Dooley says he’s “…concerned for the university, the football team, and Todd Gurley.” The legendary Dooley made the comments concerning running back Todd Gurley’s indefinite suspension from the UGA football team.

Dooley called Gurley’s suspension a “sorrowful situation” and added, “unfortunately, players like Gurley are courted by some unscrupulous people and as a result of that, he got himself in a situation that he should not have. [He] had responsibility to know what the rules are. [And] it’s unfortunate that it appears that he violated the NCAA.”

Gurley was number one in the ESPN.com poll for the Heisman Trophy the day he was suspended from the team.  He has impressed fans and critics, rushing 773 yards in the first five games this season.

The North Carolina native was a four star recruit, according to Rivals.com and started his football season with the Bulldogs as a true freshman at the running back position. He is often compared to former Bulldog and Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker, in terms of physique and rushing yards.

Vince Dooley, who led the Bulldogs from 1964 to 1988, won six Southeastern Conference titles and the 1980 National Championship during his career at the University of Georgia.

He suggested that the team “take one game at a time. [It’s a] handicap on one hand, but on the other hand, the team comes closer together and plays harder. But there’s no question that it will handicap the team.”

The Bulldogs will face the Missouri Tigers tomorrow in Missouri.
