Oglethorpe County Police Captain Doubles as Professional Fisherman

By Zack Sims

Steve Jones is a captain at the Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Office. After working in law enforcement for 23 years, Jones knows that the job can present many difficult days. He quickly learned that you need an outlet to get away from the struggles of work, and for Jones that outlet has been the outdoors.

Jones is an avid hunter and fisher, and fishes professionally in the FLW (Fishing League Worldwide). He recently qualified to fish at a Bass Fishing League tournament that takes place Oct. 8-10th at Lake Sinclair, Georgia.

He’s traveled all over the country on hunting trips and at one point even owned his own hunting guide business. This passion developed on the farm where he grew up in Oglethorpe County. Jones continues to spend quality time with his family on hunting trips all over the country.

Jones’s law enforcement career began in Athens Clarke-County with the goal of positively impacting the community. After a short stint there, he came to work in Oglethorpe County where he’s worked for 16 years. Jones will continue to try and achieve the same goal, but when the days get hard expect to find him doing the things he loves. Hunting and fishing.
