Playing Both Ways: The Increased Risk of Injury for High School Football Players

A local high school football player missed a second straight season due to injury. Ben Noland, a safety and wide receiver for Oconee County High School, tore his ACL for the second time in two consecutive seasons this year.

Why It’s Newsworthy: Noland’s second injury is part of the reason why local athletic experts are taking a closer look at whether some players in multiple positions on the field mean they risk more injuries than their fellow teammates.

They’re called “two-way” players, and as Tyler Donaldson explains, coaches and trainers are looking for ways to help those players who stay on the field throughout much of the game because they can do it all.

Tyler Donaldson is a senior majoring in journalism in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia.
