Athens-Clarke County Receives Grant, Works Toward Greater Solar Energy Efficiency

Solar technology is changing the way things used to be in Athens-Clarke County.

In fact, residents can save more money in installation of solar technology than any other county in the state. As a result, the county was named a SolSmart community for its work in support of solar energy.

Perhaps one of the projects that is most noticeable are the solar energy systems that were placed at the Oconee Street Park-and-Ride and the Multimodal Transportation Center.

Because of this change, Athens-Clarke County was one of only 83 counties throughout the entire United States to be recognized as a SolSmart community. Athens-Clarke County is also one of four counties in Georgia to be recognized.

Andrew Saunders, the Officer of Sustainability in Athens-Clarke County, says that the Office of Sustainability isn’t finished yet improving solar energy usage. It wants to add solar energy systems at the county’s streets, drainage and water treatment facilities.
