The Stairway to Nowhere is an architectural anomaly that can be found in Joseph E Brown Hall, originally built in 1932 as a men’s dorm on the University of Georgia campus.
I reached out to Gilbert Head, archival associate at the University of Georgia Archives, and Tracy Adkins, author of the book “Ghosts of Athens” to learn more about the murky history of this building and why people are still talking about this strange story today.
Why It’s Newsworthy: Despite many students having classes in Joe Brown Hall, one of the oldest buildings on the University of Georgia campus, few know the story behind the peculiar set of stairs within that lead nowhere. I wanted to find the truth about what happened in the seventies to a young student named Stanley Haddock, and my research did not disappoint.
