Six protesters, including at least one UGA student, were arrested Monday after failing to vacate the New College building on UGA’s North Campus.

According to a Clark County Jail official, Shara Chico, Cecila Padron, Yineira Lopez, Jonathan Garcia, Carrie Freshour, and Emma Krass were all booked on criminal trespass charges. They were released later Monday night on $1,870 bond each. Krass is a UGA student.

The protest comes on the heels of a decision by the Georgia Supreme Court that denies a group of undocumented students the right to sue the university system of Georgia board of regents for in-state tuition eligibility.

Freedom University, a school based in Atlanta that provides college level courses to undocumented students, said the protest called on UGA president Jere Morehead to “denounce the discriminatory practices” affecting UGA.

The University said in the statement that six individuals were arrested for criminal trespass after UGA police “respectively requested that the individuals move their protest outside.” According to the statement, approximately 40 other protesters did comply with the request. The incident took place about 3 hours after the building officially closed.
