At Tuesday’s Barrow Schools work session, Lee Bane from the Barrow STEAM program explained to the board some of new the interactive learning in the classroom.

Some of these guest lectures have taken the kids (virtually) to places like the zoo and WBSTV’s new broadcast studio.  Other guest lectures include a NASA engineer to help them understand lunar positioning and a taking the students inside an auto shop in Braselton to show and explain to the students about some of their custom race cars.

Barrow students are able to dive into the learning experience and interact with guest lecturers anywhere in the country from their own classroom.

“It open ends the question, so the students aren’t forced to just answer the questions the teacher has, but they are able to ask their own questions and get expert insight,” Bane explained.

The board and people at the work session were impressed with all the different experiences the students in Barrow County are getting to experience through Skype and FaceTime conversations with guest speakers.

Currently Bane tries to schedule video conferences once or twice a week across the district for different classes, grade levels, or schools depending on how many people are interested in the speaker.
