Today is the 30th Anniversary of the Tate Student Center.  Founded in 1983, it is such a staple of student life that it seems like it has been here forever.  From charity organizations to bake sales to the occasional flash mob, there is always something going on at the Tate Student Center.

Sarah Powell, wife of the former Director of Student Affairs tells about the surprising way the center got off the ground.

Her husband wanted a student activities center, but development was at a stand-still.  He and the students planned an “April Fool’s Groundbreaking” to create buzz and get the word out.  The Board of Regents stepped in, and the Tate Student Center was finally underway.
