Athens, Ga (GradyNewSource.com) – Investigators say an arrest warrant in a weekend Athens hit-and-run could now come as early as Wednesday.

Athens-Clarke County Police Department Lieutenant Don Eckert says investigators could ask a judge for the warrant Wednesday after a warrant was not issued Tuesday. Investigators believe they know who was driving the red 1997 Mazada pickup truck eastbound on Lexington Road in Athens Saturday morning when it struck 19-year-old Emily Bowman around 3 a.m. Eckert says they will not seek a warrant until they finish processing evidence and building a case.

The pickup truck, which had beer bottles and cans in the bed, was found blocks from the crash site.

Bowman was taken to Athens Regional Medical Center, where she remained in critical condition Tuesday.

Authorities are expected to seek hit-and-run charges but may seek additional driving while intoxicated charges if it is determined the driver was under the influence at the time of the crash.
