Athens, GA — Athens-Clarke County and Oconee County are just two counties nationwide that will observe National Bus Safety Week next week. One reason to have a bus safety week: to stop bullying on buses.
Oconee County school officials say cameras installed in buses have dramatically cut down on bullying. Oconee County has had these cameras for several years, but Athens-Clarke County installed cameras just this past summer.
Oconee County Schools Director of Transportation Duane Peterson says instances of bullying have decreased in the past few years because the bullies are being watched.
For School Bus Safety Week, officials will spend most of their time explaining how to prepare children for school bus accidents, as well as school bus bullying.
National Bus Safety week will kick off on Monday with Bus Driver Appreciation Day
