BARROW– The Barrow County School System and Board of Commissioners are coming together to build a new cultural arts venue for citizens.

The center will be located at the Sims Academy of Innovation and Technology campus in Barrow County.

Based on the current plans, the amphitheater feature a five-tiered lawn with seating for more than 8-hundred people. It would also feature a 4-thousand foot stage with a concession stand, restrooms, concrete plaza, and parking area.

Joe Perno, Assistant Superintendent for the Barrow County Board of Education, says the joint project is meant to bring something new to the area.

“We don’t really have anything like this. I’d like to see us to be able to move forward, that’s just something the board has to give us direction for.”

He says the building would be used by the community, the schools, and maybe even outside vendors.

The funds for the project are a part of the 2006 SPLOST referendum. The building should open next summer.
