Starting Nov. 1, Ogle Sanitation customers in Oglethorpe County will have to look elsewhere for recycling. Customers received a letter in the mail from the company informing them that they will no longer be providing recycling services due to rising costs.

Kevin Ogle, owner of Ogle Sanitation, told Grady Newsource they have offered recycle pickup for about two and a half years. He said there is not enough demand for recycling services to be worth it.

Ogle Sanitation serves over a thousand households throughout Oglethorpe County, and out of those, only about 100 houses ask for recycle pickup. Ogle said another issue is the amount of time and money it takes to sort trash out of recycling bins. For a business their size, the cost is not feasible.

However, homeowner Korey Jones was disappointed about receiving the letter.

“I feel like recycling is the right thing to do, and to not offer recycling anymore or basically say they’re going to trash it, that’s not what I wanted to hear,” said Jones.

Jones intends to stay with the company, and now brings his recyclables to work with him to recycle.

For Oglethorpe residents who still want to recycle, here are some options:

  • AAA Sanitation offers weekly recycling pick up for clients.
  • CHaRM (Center for Hard to Recycle Materials) off of College Avenue in Athens accepts items deemed “hard to recycle.” For example, appliances, batteries, light bulbs, and tires can all be dropped-off at CHaRM

There are also several recycling drop off centers in the area:

    Saturday: 8-11:45 a.m.
